History of Sigma Gamma Rho Sorority, Inc.

       Sigma Gamma Rho Sorority, Inc. was founded Sunday, November 12, 1922, by 7 powerful educators, Dr. Mary Lou Allison Gardner-Little, Dr. Dorothy Hanley-Whiteside, Dr. Vivian Irene White-Marbury, Dr. Nannie Mae Gahn-Johnson, Dr. Hattie Mae Annette Dulin-Redford, Dr. Bessie Mae Downey Rhoades-Martin and Dr. Cubena McClure, who emphasized empowering women and children.

       Sigma Gamma Rho Sorority, Inc. was founded at Butler University in Indianapolis, Indiana right across the street from where the Klu Klux Klan (KKK) would meet. 

​

       Sigma Gamma Rho Sorority has served 101 years of sisterhood, scholarship and service with the motto "Greater Service, Greater Progress." We show our greater service through our essential programs such as the Women's Wellness Initiative that focuses on educating women and the black community about their health and Project Cradle Care that educates women about pregnancy and risk in black women pregnancies as well as helps provide resources and essentials for black pregnant women.
